Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting')

CVE-2026-21884

Severity High
Score 8.2/10

Summary

React Router is a router for React. In @remix-run/react versions prior to 2.17.3. and react-router versions 7.0.0 prior to 7.12.0-pre.0, a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in React Router's "<ScrollRestoration>" API in Framework Mode when using the "getKey/storageKey" props during Server-Side Rendering, which could allow arbitrary JavaScript execution during SSR if untrusted content is used to generate the keys. There is no impact if server-side rendering in Framework Mode is disabled, or if Declarative Mode ("<BrowserRouter>") or Data Mode ("createBrowserRouter/<RouterProvider>") is being used. This issue has been patched in @remix-run/react version 2.17.3 and react-router version 7.12.0.

CWE-79 - Cross Site Scripting

Cross-Site Scripting, commonly referred to as XSS, is the most dominant class of vulnerabilities. It allows an attacker to inject malicious code into a pregnable web application and victimize its users. The exploitation of such a weakness can cause severe issues such as account takeover, and sensitive data exfiltration. Because of the prevalence of XSS vulnerabilities and their high rate of exploitation, it has remained in the OWASP top 10 vulnerabilities for years.
