CVE-2024-53847

Severity Medium
Score 5.1/10

Summary

The Trix rich text editor is vulnerable to Cross-site Scripting (XSS) and mutation XSS attacks when pasting malicious code. An attacker could trick a user to copy and paste malicious code that would execute arbitrary JavaScript code within the context of the user's session, potentially leading to unauthorized actions being performed or sensitive information being disclosed. This issue affects trix versions 1.x prior to 1.3.3 and 2.x prior to 2.1.9. Users should upgrade trix to a fixed version, which uses DOMPurify to sanitize the pasted content.

CWE-79 - Cross Site Scripting

Cross-Site Scripting, commonly referred to as XSS, is the most dominant class of vulnerabilities. It allows an attacker to inject malicious code into a pregnable web application and victimize its users. The exploitation of such a weakness can cause severe issues such as account takeover, and sensitive data exfiltration. Because of the prevalence of XSS vulnerabilities and their high rate of exploitation, it has remained in the OWASP top 10 vulnerabilities for years.
