Improper Neutralization of Special Elements in Output Used by a Downstream Component ('Injection')
CVE-2024-50340
Summary
The symfony/runtime is a module for the Symphony PHP framework that enables decoupling PHP applications from global states. When the "register_argv_argc" php directive is set to "on" and users call any URL with a specially crafted query string, they are able to change the environment or debug mode used by the kernel when handling the request. The "SymfonyRuntime" now ignores the "argv" values for non-SAPI PHP runtimes. This issue affects Symfony versions 5.3.0-BETA1 through 5.4.45, 6.0.0-BETA1 through 6.4.13, 7.0.0-BETA1 through 7.1.6, and 7.2.0-BETA1. All users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

CWE-74 - Injection
Listed as the number one web application security risk on the 'OWASP Top Ten', injection attacks are widespread and dangerous, especially in legacy applications. Injection attacks are a class of vulnerabilities in which an attacker injects untrusted data into a web application that gets processed by an interpreter, altering the program's execution. This can result in data loss/theft, loss of data integrity, denial of service, and even compromising the entire system.
