Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting')

CVE-2024-47878

Severity Medium
Score 6.1/10

Summary

OpenRefine is a free, open source tool for working with messy data. The "/extension/gdata/authorized" endpoint includes the "state" GET parameter verbatim in a "<script>" tag in the output, so without escaping. An attacker could lead or redirect a user to a crafted URL containing JavaScript code, which would then cause that code to be executed in the victim's browser as if it were part of OpenRefine. This issue affects org.openrefine:extensions versions prior to 3.8.3.

CWE-79 - Cross Site Scripting

Cross-Site Scripting, commonly referred to as XSS, is the most dominant class of vulnerabilities. It allows an attacker to inject malicious code into a pregnable web application and victimize its users. The exploitation of such a weakness can cause severe issues such as account takeover, and sensitive data exfiltration. Because of the prevalence of XSS vulnerabilities and their high rate of exploitation, it has remained in the OWASP top 10 vulnerabilities for years.
