Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting')
CVE-2024-45060
Summary
PHPSpreadsheet is a pure PHP library for reading and writing spreadsheet files. One of the sample scripts in PHPSpreadsheet is susceptible to Cross-site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability due to improper input handling where a number is expected, leading to formula injection. The code in "45_Quadratic_equation_solver.php" concatenates user-supplied parameters directly into spreadsheet formulas. This allows an attacker to control the formula and output unsanitized data into the page, resulting in JavaScript execution. This issue affects versions prior to 1.29.2, 2.0.x prior to 2.1.1, and 2.2.x prior to 2.3.0. All users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

CWE-79 - Cross Site Scripting
Cross-Site Scripting, commonly referred to as XSS, is the most dominant class of vulnerabilities. It allows an attacker to inject malicious code into a pregnable web application and victimize its users. The exploitation of such a weakness can cause severe issues such as account takeover, and sensitive data exfiltration. Because of the prevalence of XSS vulnerabilities and their high rate of exploitation, it has remained in the OWASP top 10 vulnerabilities for years.
