Uncontrolled Resource Consumption
CVE-2024-28863
Summary
node-tar is a Tar for Node.js. tar versions prior to 6.2.1 have no limit on the number of sub-folders created in the folder creation process. An attacker who generates a large number of sub-folders can consume memory on the system running node-tar and even crash the Node.js client within a few seconds of running it using a path with too many sub-folders inside. This issue was fixed by preventing extraction in excessively deep sub-folders.

CWE-400 - Uncontrolled resource consumption
An uncontrolled resource allocation attack (also known as resource exhaustion attack) triggers unauthorized overconsumption of the limited resources in an application, such as memory, file system storage, database connection pool entries, and CPU. This may lead to denial of service for valid users and degradation of the application's functionality as well as that of the host operating system.
