Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting')

CVE-2024-28190

Severity Medium
Score 5.4/10

Summary

Contao is an open source content management system. In versions contao/core-bundle versions 4.0.0-beta1 through 4.13.39, and 5.0.0-RC1 through 5.3.3, users can inject malicious code in filenames when uploading files (back end and front end), which is then executed in tooltips and popups in the back end. As a workaround, remove upload fields from frontend forms and disable uploads for untrusted back end users.

CWE-79 - Cross Site Scripting

Cross-Site Scripting, commonly referred to as XSS, is the most dominant class of vulnerabilities. It allows an attacker to inject malicious code into a pregnable web application and victimize its users. The exploitation of such a weakness can cause severe issues such as account takeover, and sensitive data exfiltration. Because of the prevalence of XSS vulnerabilities and their high rate of exploitation, it has remained in the OWASP top 10 vulnerabilities for years.
