Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal')

CVE-2024-1728

Severity High
Score 7.5/10

Summary

The package gradio is vulnerable to a local file inclusion vulnerability due to improper validation of user-supplied input in the `UploadButton` component. Attackers can exploit this vulnerability to read arbitrary files on the filesystem, such as private SSH keys, by manipulating the file path in the request to the `/queue/join` endpoint. This issue could potentially lead to remote code execution. The vulnerability is present in the handling of file upload paths, allowing attackers to redirect file uploads to unintended locations on the server. This issue affects gradio versions prior to 4.19.2.

CWE-22 - Path Traversal

Path traversal (or directory traversal), is a vulnerability that allows malicious users to traverse the server's root directory, gaining access to arbitrary files and folders such as application code & data, back-end credentials, and sensitive operating system files. In the worst-case scenario, an attacker could potentially execute arbitrary files on the server, resulting in a denial of service attack. Such an exploit may severely impact the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of an application.
