Improperly Controlled Modification of Object Prototype Attributes ('Prototype Pollution')

CVE-2022-39357

Severity High
Score 9.8/10

Summary

Winter is a free, open-source content management system based on the Laravel PHP framework. The Snowboard framework in versions 1.1.8 prior to 1.1.10, and 1.2.x prior to 1.2.1 is vulnerable to Prototype Pollution in the main Snowboard class as well as its plugin loader. The 1.0 branch of Winter is not affected, as it does not contain the Snowboard framework. As a workaround, one may avoid this issue by following some common security practices for JavaScript, including implementing a content security policy and auditing scripts.

CWE-1321 - Prototype Pollution

Prototype pollution is one of the lesser-known vulnerabilities. It allows attackers to abuse the rules of JavaScript by injecting properties into the general object “Object” in JS. Modifying the prototype of “Object” affects the behavior of all objects in the entire app, potentially resulting in denial of service, arbitrary code execution, cross-site scripting, etc.
