Integer Overflow or Wraparound

CVE-2022-29824

Severity Medium
Score 6.5/10

Summary

In libxml2 prior to 2.9.14, several buffer handling functions in "buf.c" (xmlBuf*) and tree.c (xmlBuffer*) don't check for integer overflows. This can result in out-of-bounds memory writes. Exploitation requires a victim to open a crafted, multi-gigabyte XML file. Other software using libxml2's buffer functions, for example libxslt is affected as well.

CWE-190 - Integer Overflow or Wraparound

The software performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control.
