Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting')

CVE-2022-23494

Severity Medium
Score 6.1/10

Summary

Tinymce is an open source rich text editor. A Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in versions prior to 5.10.7 and 6.0.x prior to 6.3.1 in the alert and confirm dialogs when these dialogs were provided with malicious HTML content. This can occur in plugins that use the alert or confirm dialogs, such as in the `image` plugin, which presents these dialogs when certain errors occur. The vulnerability allowed arbitrary JavaScript execution when an alert presented in the TinyMCE UI for the current user. This vulnerability has been patched by ensuring HTML sanitization was still performed after unwrapping invalid elements. Users unable to upgrade may ensure the `images_upload_handler` returns a valid value as per the `images_upload_handler` documentation.

CWE-79 - Cross Site Scripting

Cross-Site Scripting, commonly referred to as XSS, is the most dominant class of vulnerabilities. It allows an attacker to inject malicious code into a pregnable web application and victimize its users. The exploitation of such a weakness can cause severe issues such as account takeover, and sensitive data exfiltration. Because of the prevalence of XSS vulnerabilities and their high rate of exploitation, it has remained in the OWASP top 10 vulnerabilities for years.
