Summary

An issue was discovered in MediaWiki before 1.35.5, 1.36.x before 1.36.3 and 1.37.x before 1.37.1. A denial of service (resource consumption) can be accomplished by searching for a very long key in a Language Name Search. This issue affects Mediawiki UniversalLanguageSelector extension package versions prior to 2021.10.

An uncontrolled resource allocation attack (also known as resource exhaustion attack) triggers unauthorized overconsumption of the limited resources in an application, such as memory, file system storage, database connection pool entries, and CPU. This may lead to denial of service for valid users and degradation of the application's functionality as well as that of the host operating system.
