Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal')

CVE-2021-39143

Severity High
Score 7.1/10

Summary

Spinnaker is an open source, multi-cloud continuous delivery platform. A path traversal vulnerability was discovered in clouddriver in version 5.74.0 uses of TAR files by AppEngine for deployments. This uses a utility to extract files locally for deployment without validating the paths in that deployment don't override system files. This would allow an attacker to override files on the container, POTENTIALLY introducing a MITM type attack vector by replacing libraries or injecting wrapper files.

CWE-22 - Path Traversal

Path traversal (or directory traversal), is a vulnerability that allows malicious users to traverse the server's root directory, gaining access to arbitrary files and folders such as application code & data, back-end credentials, and sensitive operating system files. In the worst-case scenario, an attacker could potentially execute arbitrary files on the server, resulting in a denial of service attack. Such an exploit may severely impact the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of an application.
