Improper Authentication in org.apache.tomcat:catalina
CVE-2012-5887
- org.apache.tomcat:catalina
- org.apache.tomcat.embed:tomcat-embed-core
- org.apache.tomcat:tomcat-catalina
- tomcat:catalina
Summary
The HTTP Digest Access Authentication implementation in Apache Tomcat 5.5.x prior to 5.5.36, 6.x prior to 6.0.36, and 7.x prior to 7.0.30 does not properly check for stale nonce values in conjunction with enforcement of proper credentials, which makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions by sniffing the network for valid requests.

CWE-287 - Improper Authentication
Improper (or broken) authentication attacks are widespread, and have accounted for many of the worst data breaches in recent years. Improper authentication attacks are a class of vulnerabilities where an attacker impersonates a legitimate user by exploiting weaknesses in either session management or credential management to gain access to the user’s account. This can result in disclosure of sensitive information, and can lead to system compromise, theft, identity theft, and fraud.
