Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal')
CVE-2022-4510
Summary
A path traversal vulnerability was identified in ReFirm Labs binwalk in versions 2.2.0 through 2.3.3. By crafting a malicious PFS filesystem file, an attacker can get binwalk's PFS extractor to extract files at arbitrary locations when binwalk is run in extraction mode (-e option). Remote code execution can be achieved by building a PFS filesystem that, upon extraction, would extract a malicious binwalk module into the folder ".config/binwalk/plugins". This vulnerability is associated with program files "src/binwalk/plugins/unpfs.py". NOTE: The affected versions of this package are not available in a package manager we support.

CWE-22 - Path Traversal
Path traversal (or directory traversal), is a vulnerability that allows malicious users to traverse the server's root directory, gaining access to arbitrary files and folders such as application code & data, back-end credentials, and sensitive operating system files. In the worst-case scenario, an attacker could potentially execute arbitrary files on the server, resulting in a denial of service attack. Such an exploit may severely impact the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of an application.
